    Two novel Schiff base ligands, 4-((3-(trimethoxysilyl) propylimino) methyl) benzene-1,2,3-triol ((LH)-H-1) and 4-((3-(triethoxysilyl) propylimino) methyl) benzene-1,2,3-triol ((LH)-H-2), have been synthesized by the reaction of 2,3,4-trihydroxybenzaldehyde with 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, respectively. The mononuclear Co-II and Cu-II complexes of these Schiff bases were prepared. The complexes of the Schiff bases are formed by coordination of N, O atoms of the ligands. The proposed structures were confirmed by elemental analyses, FT-IR, and UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility, and conductance measurements; the H-1 NMR spectra of the ligands were also recorded. The analytical data show that the metal to ligand ratio in the complexes containing silicon is 1:2. The electrochemical properties of the complexes have been investigated at 100 mVs(-1) scan rate in DMSO. In addition, the antimicrobial activity of (LH)-H-1 and (LH)-H-2 Schiff ligands, and their [M(L-1)2] and [M(L-2)2] type coordination compounds, were investigated.

  • A Copper(II) Schiff base complex immobilized onto SBA-15 silica for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol

    A copper(II) Schiff base complex has been immobilized onto SBA-15 silica through a stepwise procedure and tested as an oxidation catalyst. BET surface area, total pore volume and average pore width of the SBA-15 all decrease after stepwise modification of SBA-15, while the structure of the support remains intact. The molar ratio of Cu2+/Schiff base is ca. 1/2 in the synthesized material. Catalytic tests showed that the supported copper complex catalyzes the oxidation of benzyl alcohol with 30 % conversion and 89 % selectivity to benzaldehyde when water is used as the solvent.

  • Tuning Cooperativity by Controlling the Linker Length of Silica-Supported Amines in Catalysis and CO<sub>2</sub> Capture

    Cooperative interactions between amino-alkylsilanes and silanols on a silica surface can be controlled by varying the length of the alkyl linker attaching the amine to the silica surface from C1 (methyl) to C5 (pentyl). The linker length strongly affects the catalytic cooperativity of amines and silanols in aldol condensations as well as the adsorptive cooperativity for CO2 capture. The catalytic cooperativity increases with the linker length up to propyl (C3), with longer, more flexible linkers (up to CS) providing no additional benefit or hindrance. Short linkers (C1 and C2) limit the beneficial amine-silanol cooperativity in aldol condensations, resulting in lower catalytic rates than with the C3+ linkers. For the same materials, the adsorptive cooperativity exhibits similar trends for CO2 capture efficiency.
