The improvement comprises a vinyl acetate-ethylene polymer formed by aqueous emulsion polymerization and having crystalline ethylene segments which imparts a thermal melt temperature, heat of fusion and tensile storage modulus to the polymer. The vinyl acetate-ethylene polymers have:
a crystalline melting point (T

) ranging from 35 to 110° C. measured at a heat rate of 20° C./minute and,
a tensile storage modulus of at least 1×10

dynes/cm

at 115° C. and measured at 6.28 rad/sec.
