  Although the cyclization (if o-hydrazinomandelic acid is known to yield 3-cinnolinol (3-hydroxycinnoline) (the Neber-Bossel synthesis), the cyclization of alpha-substituted o-hydrazinomandelic acids may yield either the corresponding 4-substituted 3-cinnolinol or the 3-substituted 1-aminodioxindole.
