The photolysis of perfluoroazooctane in perfluorohexane upon 185nm irradiation was investigated by means of quantum yield, light intensity dependence, and UV-vis spectra of the photolysis of perfluoroazooctane. Perfluoroazooctane (trans isomer) was photoisomerized by one photon absorption to cis isomer, followed by extrusion of nitrogen by another photon absorption.

The object of the present invention is to offer a polymer composite material that provides superior heat resistance, mechanical physical properties, substance permeation barrier properties, flame retardant properties, electrical conductivity and the like. Moreover, another object of the present invention is to offer a novel surface-modified nanofiller that utilizes this type of polymer composite material. The polymer composite material contains nanofillers, fluorocompounds and polymers. The fluorocompounds bond to the surface of the nanofillers. The nanofillers to which fluorocompounds are surface-bonded are mixed with or dispersed in polymers.

Embodiments disclosed herein include graphitic stationary phase materials functionalized through a gas-phase functionalization reaction, as well as and methods for making and using these materials, including the use of these materials in separation technologies such as, but not limited to, chromatography and solid phase extraction. In an embodiment, a functionalized graphitic stationary phase material may be prepared from high surface area porous graphitic carbon and a radical forming volatilized functionalizing agent. The radical forming volatilized functionalizing agent produces an intermediate that forms a covalent bond with the surface of the porous graphitic material and imparts desired properties to the surface of the graphitic carbon.

Perfluorooctylation of aromatic compounds with perfluoroazooctane upon 185 nm irradiation in a two-phase system

An efficient method for the preparation of perfluorooctylated aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds has been developed using photolysis of perfluoroazooctane (E)-1 upon 185 nm irradiation. The use of a two-phase system made up of a perfluorohexane solution of (E)-1 and a suitable aromatic compound has proved efficient for this reaction. The photolytic mechanism of (E)-1 upon 185 nm irradiation has also been investigated on the basis of quantum yield, light intensity dependence and UV–VIS spectra. It is shown that (E)-1 is photoisomerized by one photon absorption to the (Z)-isomer, with subsequent extrusion of nitrogen by a second photon absorption.
