The first totalsynthesis of Cu(I)-methanobactin OB3b, a unique carcerand-like chalkophore, is reported. Key features were a cyclodehydratation-thioacylation sequence for accessing two unprecedented azlactone building blocks and metal ion-templation for enabling cyclization of the methanobactin peptide backbone.
