    A novel transition metal complex, preferably a ruthenium-phosphine complex or rhodium-phosphine complex, which is effectively usable in various asymmetric syntheses and, in particular, is more effectively usable in the asymmetric hydrogenation of various ketones; and a novel process for producing an optically active alcohol with the complex. The novel transition metal complex includes a ligand obtained by introducing a diarylphosphino group into each of the 2- and 2′-positions of diphenyl ether, benzophenone, benzhydrol, or the like. It preferably further includes an optically active 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine coordinated thereto. The complex preferably is a novel diphosphine-ruthenium-optically active diamine complex or diphosphine-rhodium-optically active diamine complex. The process comprises using the complex as an asymmetric hydrogenation catalyst to conduct the asymmetric hydrogenation of a ketone compound to thereby obtain an optically active alcohol in a high optical purity and a high yield.

    Oil soluble grafted ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer useful as a viscosity modifier for oleaginous compositions comprising: (i) backbone copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of Mw/Mn of less than 2 and a ratio of Mz/M2 of less than 1.8, and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comprising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition from one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene; having grafted on said backbone copolymer (ii) residue of ethylenically unsaturated grafting material; said grafted ethylenealpha-olefin copolymer having substantially the molecular weight distribution, i.e., within about 10 percent, of said copolymer of ethylene. The preferred grafting material is an ethylenically monounsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or an anhydride group.

    Composition of matter useful as a multifunctional viscosity index improver for lubricating oils comprising reaction product of: (i) (a) degraded ethylene-alpha-olefin copolymer obtained by degrading undegraded copolymer of ethylene and at least one other alpha-olefin monomer, said undegraded copolymer comprising intramolecularly heterogeneous copolymer chains containing at least one crystallizable segment of methylene units and at least one low crystallinity ethylene-alpha- olefin copolymer segment, wherein said at least one crystallizable segment comprises at least about 10 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent of said copolymer chain and contains at least about 57 weight percent ethylene, wherein said low crystallinity segment contains not greater than about 53 weight percent ethylene, and wherein said copolymer has a molecular weight distribution characterized by at least one of a ratio of M w/M n of less than 2 and a ratio of M Z/M w of less than 1.8 and wherein at least two portions of an individual intramolecularly heterogeneous chain, each portion comrising at least 5 weight percent of said chain, differ in composition form one another by at least 7 weight percent ethylene; said degraded copolymer grafted with (b) ethylenically monounsaturated carboxylic acid material having 1 to 2 carboxylic acid groups or anhydride group to form grafted degraded ethylene copolymer; and (ii) at least one polyamine containing one primary amino group and at least one tertiary amino group.

    A novel transition metal complex, preferably a ruthenium-phosphine complex or rhodium-phosphine complex, which is effectively usable in various asymmetric syntheses and, in particular, is more effectively usable in the asymmetric hydrogenation of various ketones; and a novel process for producing an optically active alcohol with the complex. The novel transition metal complex includes a ligand obtained by introducing a diarylphosphino group into each of the 2- and 2'-positions of diphenyl ether, benzophenone, benzhydrol, or the like. It preferably further includes an optically active 1,2-diphenylethylenediamine coordinated thereto. The complex preferably is a novel diphosphine-ruthenium-optically active diamine complex or diphosphine-rhodium-optically active diamine complex. The process comprises using the complex as an asymmetric hydrogenation catalyst to conduct the asymmetric hydrogenation of a ketone compound to thereby obtain an optically active alcohol in a high optical purity and a high yield.
