    Cross-linked polyimides based on a novel crosslinker and methods of making the same. The general structure of these heat-resistant and amorphous polyimides is shown as follows: in which n, m, and l denote the degrees of polymerization (DP) of each arm and the linking group R′ is one of the following moieties: —C(CF3)2—, —O—, —SO2—, >C(═O), —OPh-C(CH3)2-PhO-, -(Ph)C(CF3)—, or a direct bond (—). Films (cantilevers) comprising cross-linked polyimides according to the present invention demonstrate photodirected bending upon exposure to linearly polarized light.

    A branched polyimide of the formula (I) wherein G is a group having a valence of t, present in an amount of 0.01 to 10 mol %, or 0.05 to 5 mol %, or 0.1 to 4 mol %, or 0.1 to 3 mol %, each of Q, M, D, V, and R are as defined herein, q is 0 or 1, m is 0 or 1, d is 0 or 1, p is 1 or 2, t is 2 to 6, preferably 2 to 4, and each n is independently the same or different, and is 1 to 1,000, provided that the total of all values of n is greater than 4, wherein the branched polyimide has a zero-shear viscosity in a range from 500 to 15,000 Pa·s, a rheology ratio of 1.1 to 5, and a strain hardening ratio of 1 to 6.

    A polyimide composition includes 1 to 99 weight percent, preferably 70 to 99 weight percent, more preferably 75 to 95 weight percent of a first polyimide; and 1 to 99 weight percent, preferably 1 to 30 weight percent, more preferably 2 to 25 weight percent of a second polyimide, wherein the first polyimide and the second polyimide are different, and wherein the polyimide composition has a melt flow rate that is greater than a melt flow rate of the first polyimide and less than a melt flow rate of the second polyimide; an apparent viscosity that is less than an apparent viscosity of the first polyimide and less than an apparent viscosity of the second polyimide; and a notched Izod impact strength that is greater than a notched Izod impact strength of the first polyimide and greater than a notched Izod impact strength of the second polyimide.

    New polyimide-silica hybrid materials were prepared using the polyamic acid synthesized by copolymerization of 3,3',4,4'-benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) and an A(2)A'-type tri-functional amine, 1,1-bis(4-(aminophenoxy)phenyl)-1-(4-(4-amino-2-trifluoromethylphenoxy)phenyl)ethane (1) (BTDA:ODA:1 = 7:6:1 in the molar). 3-(Triethoxysilyl)propyl succinic anhydride(TESSA) was reacted with amino groups in polyamic acid to introduce ethoxysilyl moiety which act as conjugation site for silica. The polyimide-silica hybrid films were prepared by a sol-gel reaction of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in a solution of the polyamic acid, followed by thermal imidation. Self-standing films were obtained with up to 50 wt.% silica, and transparent films were obtained at up to 40 wt.% silica. Dynamic-mechanical and mechanical analyses were carried out to examine the properties of hybrid films. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
