Synthesis, and spectral and X-ray structural studies of a novel delocalised triphosphazene (CF3)2PNP(CF3) 2NPPh3 and the triosmium cluster complex Os3(CO)11[(CF3)2PNP(CF3)2NPPh3]

The triphosphazene (CF3)2PNP(CF3)2NPPh3(L), prepared by the reaction of (CF3)2PN3 with (CF3)2PNPPh3, has been found to afford the cluster [Os3(CO)11(CF3)2PNP(CF3)2NPPh3}] (1) with [Os3(CO)11(MeCN)]. Both L and 1 have been shown by X-ray crystallography to have an unusual and highly delocalised PNPNP moiety containing PIV, PV and PVI atoms.

The diphosphazene (CF3)2PNPPh3 L prepared from the reaction of (CF3)2PN3 with PPh3 has been shown from a single-crystal X-ray structural study to possess an unusual and novel delocalised PNP moiety containing PIV and PV atoms; the PNP structure is retained upon coordination to Fe in the complexes [Fe(CO)4(CF3)2PNPPh3}]1 and [Fe(CO)3(CF3)2PNPPh3}2]2.
