4,4,4-Trifluoro-2-butenenitrile was synthesized by the Wittig reaction of trifluoroacetaldehyde and cyanomethylidenetriphenylphosphorane and separated to individual E- and Z-isomers by rectification. Each isomer undergoes stereospecific [4+2] cycloaddition to anthracene.
