The four intramolecularly coordinated azidoalanes R2Al(N-3) and RAltBu(N-3) (R = (CH2)(3)NMe2 (1b, 3b), 2-(Me2NCH2)C6H4 (2b, 4b)) were synthesized by reaction of the corresponding aluminum chlorides (1a-4a) with an excess of dry sodium azide in refluxing toluene or toluene/THF. The structures of the products were deduced from H-1, C-13, and Al-27 NMR spectra and were confirmed by X-ray structural determinations of la, Ib, and 2b. The compounds of type 1 and 2 contain pentacoordinated Al atoms, whereas the alanes of type 3 and 4 show tetracoordination of the central Al atoms.
