    The derivatization and fluorodensitometric determination of carboxylic acids (CA), imides and alcohols with 1-chloromethylbenz[c,d]indol-2(1H)-one (19, CMBI) have been studied. Out of a series of fluorescent fused lactams 9-11, 13-15 and 17, benzindolone 17 was selected and transformed via hydroxymethylbenzin-dolone 18 into CMBI 19.     (glyoxal) as the double carbonylation reagent. Simple CuCl2⋅2H2O (copper(II) chloride dihydrate) was used as the oxidant for this transformation. Under optimized reaction conditions, various primary and secondary anilines were double-carbonylated to afford their corresponding isatins (26 examples, up to 80% yields).

    3-Imino-2-amino-isatines were obtained by a one-pot reaction of an excess of aniline (or its derivatives) with 1,2-bis(dimethylamino)-1,2-dichloro-ethene (prepared in situ from DMF). Subsequent hydrolysis yielded the corresponding isatine derivatives in reasonable to high yields. DFT calculations with regard to the mechanisms of this reaction sequence are presented. J.
