Treatment of 3beta-hydroxyl-5-Delta steroids with anhydrous FeCl(3) in CH(2)Cl(2) afforded reasonable yields of the corresponding alkyl chlorides with a retention of configurations. Etherification of hydroxysteroids via triflates

Triflates of saturated alcohols are useful in the alkylation of 3- and 17-hydroxysteroids in the presence of hindered amines. The etherification is successful even in those cases where other alkylating agents are noneffective.

Abstract In the presence of montmorillonite K 10, 5(6)-unsaturated sterols (1) were heated at refluxing temperature in dichloromethane to provide 5(6)/5′(6′)-unsaturated 3β,3′β-disteryl ethers (4) in 69–73% yield. The mechanism of the reaction was discussed.
