The invention relates to an indenyl compound of the general formula R'Ind--M--(Cp)Q.sub.k in which the symbols have the following meanings: Ind: an indenyl group R': a substituent, other than hydrogen, to the Ind group, Cp: a cyclopentadienyl group M: a transition metal from group 3, 4, 5 or 6 of the Periodic System of Elements Q: a ligand to M and k is an integer linked to the valence of M.
