Certain novel 6-acylamino-2,2-dimethyl-3-(5-tetrazolyl)penam derivatives, and salts thereof; their use as broad-spectrum antibacterial agents; and methods for their preparation. Their preparation comprises acylation of the novel intermediate, 6-amino-2,2-dimethyl-3-(5-tetrazolyl)penam or simple derivatives thereof, followed, in some cases, by further transformations of the 6-acylamino group or by removal of a protecting group from the 5-tetrazolyl moiety. Process for the preparation of 6-amino-2,2-dimethyl-3-(5-tetrazolyl)penam, simple derivatives thereof and intermediates therefor.

The catalytic effects of various metal halides and solvents on the reaction of benzoyl chloride with sodiumcyanate were studied. It has been found that SnCl4, and ZnCl2. catalyze the reaction to give the corresponding acyl isocyanates in good yields. The scope of the reaction was studied and a number of aroyl isocyanates and their derivatives were prepared. A few non aromatic isocyanates and their

4-Trimethylsiloxy-1,3-oxazin-6-ones, easily generated in situ from trimethylsilylketene and acyl isocyanates, smoothly react with the enamines of cycloalkanones to give bicyclic 2-pyridones.
1-(N-Acyl-carbamoyl)-2-cyanoaziridines of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen or sulphur, Z is hydrogen or an organic radical, and Y is a carbonyl, sulphonyl, sulphinyl, sulphenyl, phosphoryl or phosphonyl radical, and salts thereof, exhibit immune-stimulating and cancerostatic activities.
