A novel approach has been developed for the preparation of all of the possible diastereoisomers of mercaptoalcohol 1, a potent matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor, with easy access to various P1′ substituents. Readily available chiral epoxides have been used as the starting materials to control the stereochemistry of the -OH group.
