Exposure of the following cyclicphosphazenes to 60Co γ-rays at 77 K gives electron-gain centres having e.s.r. spectra characteristic of phosphoranyl radicals: N3P3X6(X = Cl or Br), N3P3Cl3(NMe2)3 and N4P4X8(X = Cl or Br). infrared spectra of polyphosphazenes (phosphonitrilic halides trimer), (NPX2)3whereX=F, Cl and Br have been recorded. The molecules were generated for the first time by an on-line process using solid (NPCl2)3 as a precursor passed over heated sodium fluoride and potassium bromide at about 550 and 700 degrees C for (NPF2)3 and (NPBr2)3 production, respectively.
