Carbonyl fluoride, which can also be used as an etching gas, can be prepared by photochemical oxidation of chlorodifluoromethane or trifluoromethane with light, for example with light of a wavelength ≧280 nm in the presence of chlorine.

Carbonylfluoride is a versatile intermediate to organic fluorine compounds. Its reaction with carbonyl compounds such as cyclohexanone, benzaldehyde and benzophenone gives the gem-difluorides, while N,N-dimethylformamide yields a,a-difluorotrimethylamine. Metal fluoride-catalyzed addition at the ethylenic bond in perfluoroolefins forms perfluoroacyl fluorides, while the C--?! unsaturated compounds

The carbamyl fluoride SF5NHC(O)F reacts with both H2O and H2S to give the urea (SF5NH)2CO. Evidence supports that this reaction proceeds through a mechanism involving dehydrofluorination; whereas, the reagents PhLi and PCl5 serve only to dehydrofluorinate SF5NHC(O)F. The ring of the cyclic imide SF5NC(O)CF2CF2C(O) can be readily opened by nucleophiles to give products such as SF5NHC(O)CF2CF2C(O)OH

Amino protection of amino-acids with the new, acid-labile Adpoc group is achieved by acylation with Adpoc fluoride, a very reactive and stable compound; the reagent allows the introduction of the Adpoc group under mild conditions and in high yields.
