The present invention relates to a carrier fluid for the introduction of gravel into a wellbore and, in particular, provides an aqueous carrier fluid for the introduction of gravel into a wellbore said carrier fluid comprising:
1) Water,
2) 0 to 50% by weight of the total carrier fluid of one or more alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salts,
3) A shale inhibitor which is selected from one or more of amine polymers, amide polymers, imine polymers, quaternary ammonium salt containing polymers and polyalkylene glycols,
4) A polymeric fluid loss additive, preferably a starch compound,
5) One or more particulate bridging agents, being particulates being other than the gravel to be introduced into the well bore, and said particulates being sized according to the fracture and reservoir pore size characteristics of the wellbore, and, being removable from the well after the gravel placement job is finished,
and wherein said carrier fluid has a coefficient of friction lower than that of water.
