A visible-light-promotedsynthesis of benzothiazoles from 2-aminothiophenols and aldehydes has been developed. A wide range of aromatic, heteroaromatic and aliphatic aldehydes were successfully applied. The benzothiazole products were prepared in good yields. The reaction was carried out in the absence of transition-metal catalysts and extra additives. A radical reaction pathway was proposed.

Oxidativedeamination of benzyl amines is achieved using a Ni(II)–NHC catalyst with water in aqueous medium. The product is an aldehyde, wherein water acts as a formal oxidant. Hemilabile pyridyl units embedded in the catalyst allow the approach of amine to the metal and promotes nucleophilic water attack on the metal-bound imine.
