The present invention relates to benzoxazinone compounds having a yellow index less than about 0, and a sodium concentration less than about 50 ppm. This invention also relates to a process for preparing these compounds comprising the step of reacting an isatoic anhydride with approximately stoichiometric amounts of an acylating compound, where the isatoic anhydride is purified by re-crystallization or other purification methods.

Described as one aspect of the invention are polyester compositions A polyester composition comprising at least one polyester which comprises:
(A) a dicarboxylic acid component comprising:
i) 70 to 100 mole % of cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues or an ester thereof comprising:
(a) 80 to 99 mole % trans-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues or an ester thereof; and
(b) 1 to 20 mole % cis-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues or an ester thereof;
ii) 0 to 30 mole % of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid residues, other than cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues, having up to 16 carbon atoms or esters thereof, other than cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues; and
iii) 0 to 10 mole % of aromatic dicarboxylic acid residues having up to 20 carbon atoms; and
(B) a glycol component comprising:
i) 5 to 35 mole % of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol residues; and
ii) 65 to 95 mole % of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol residues, 1,3-cyclohexanedimethanol residues, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol residues or esters thereof or mixtures thereof,
wherein the total mole % of said dicarboxylic acid component is equal to 100 mole %;
the total mole % of said glycol component is equal to 100 mole %;
wherein the inherent viscosity of said polyester is from 0.35 to 1.2 dL/g as determined in 60/40 (wt/wt) phenol/tetrachloroethane at a concentration of 0.5 g/100 ml at 25° C.; and wherein said polyester has a Tg of from 66 to 120° C. The polyesters may be manufactured into articles.

Described as one aspect of the invention are polyester compositions comprising at least one polyester which comprises:
(A) a dicarboxylic acid component comprising:
i) 70 to 100 mole % of cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues or an ester thereof comprising:
(a) 70 to 98 mole % trans-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues or an ester thereof; and
(b) 2 to 30 mole % cis-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues or an ester thereof;
ii) 0 to 30 mole % of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid residues, other than cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues, having up to 16 carbon atoms or esters thereof, other than cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid residues,; and
iii) 0 to 10 mole % of aromatic dicarboxylic acid residues having up to 20 carbon atoms; and
(B) a glycol component comprising:
i) 1 to 99 mole % of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol residues; and
ii) 1 to 99 mole % of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol residues, 1,3-cyclohexanedimethanol residues, 1,2-cyclohexanedimethanol residues or esters thereof or mixtures thereof,
wherein the total mole % of said dicarboxylic acid component is equal to 100 mole %;
the total mole % of said glycol component is equal to 100 mole %;
wherein the inherent viscosity of said polyester is from 0.35 to 1.2 dL/g as determined in 60/40 (wt/wt) phenol/tetrachloroethane at a concentration of 0.5 g/100 ml at 25° C.; and wherein said polyester has a Tg of from 60 to 155° C. The polyesters may be manufactured into articles.

A process for producing an aromatic polyester having an increased degree of polymerization. The process comprises reacting a hydroxyl-terminated, substantially linear, fiber-forming aromatic polyester having an aromatic dicarboxylic acid as a main acid component at an elevated temperature with a bi-cyclic imino ester compound of formula (I) or formula (II). According to the process, the molecularchains of the aromatic polyester are bonded to each other by the terminal hydroxyl groups thereof to form rapidly the aromatic polyester having an increased degree of polymerization.

A high molecular weight aliphatic polyester copolymer, a high molecular weight aliphatic polyester copolymer containing polylactic acid; process for industrially producing these copolymers; composition of these copolymers; and various uses thereof. These copolymers have practical properties which make the copolymers moldable. They are free from the problem of plasticizer bleeding and can be degraded by microorganisms present in soils or water. They give moldings, such as sheets and films, which combine a sufficient strength with tear resistance. When the copolymers are ones having a branched structure, they give a molding having excellent mechanical properties. The moldings obtained from compositions containing either of these copolymers are excellent in elongation and biodegradability and have a satisfactory balanc therebetween. In particular, blending with one or more other biodegradable resins gives a molding having better moldability.
