    Two dansyl fluorophores bearing amino acid for monitoring Hg2+ in aqueous solution and live cells

    A series of compounds (1-4) bearing one or two dansyl fluorophore(s) based on a Lys amino acid were synthesized in solid phase synthesis. Among them, two dansyl labeled Lys amino acid 3 detected Hg2+ in a 100% aqueous solution with high sensitivity (K-d=4.3 nM) via a turn-on response. Compound 3 was applied for monitoring Hg2+ in environmental and biological fields. 3 showed a hypersensitive response to Hg2+ without interferences from other metal ions and satisfied the requirements for monitoring the maximum allowable level (2 ppb) of mercury ions in drinking water demanded by EPA. In addition, 3 penetrated living HeLa cells and detected intracellular Hg2+. The organic spectroscopic data revealed the two sulfonamide and amide groups of 3 played a key role in stabilizing the 3-Hg2+ complex. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    A microchip laboratory system (10) and method provide fluidic manipulations for a variety of applications, including sample injection for microchip chemical separations. The microchip is fabricated using standard photolithographic procedures and chemical wet etching, with the substrate and cover plate joined using direct bonding. Capillary electrophoresis and electrochomatography are performed in channels (26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38) formed in the substrate. Analytes are loaded into a four-way intersection of channels by electrokinetically pumping the analyte through the intersection (40), followed by a switching of the potentials to force an analyte plug into the separation channel (34).

    A method of authenticating products or packaging by analyzing key ingredients on products or on product packaging is disclosed. Light-sensitive compounds can be used to identify the product or product packaging. The product or product package may include visible or invisible ink containing a particular light-sensitive compound. One or more light-sensitive compounds and ink, if used, may be printed in one or more locations on the product or product packaging to produce an authentication mark to inhibit inadvertent or intentional removal of the mark, thereby rendering the mark tamper-resistant. The mark is sealed to isolate the mark from the environment. A device may be used to irradiate the mark and read light absorption or emission. A controller determines the authenticity of the mark by comparing the emitted or absorbed properties to a standard.
