An anhydride-promoted [4+2] cyclization of easily available 2-(hydroxymethyl)phenols with amides was reported, providing a practical way to the synthesis of novel highly steric 3,3′-bis-substituted 4H-benzo[e][1,3]oxazines as well as bis(benzo[e][1,3]oxazines).
