Butyldimethyl(1-phenylethyl)ammonium bromide is found to be an efficient catalyst for the three-component reaction of an aldehyde, aromatic amine, and trimethylphosphite in refluxing CH2Cl2 to afford corresponding α-amino phosphonate in high yield.

Green protocols for the syntheses of 3,3′-arylidenebis-4-hydroxycoumarins and dimethyl ((substituted phenyl) (phenylamino)methyl) phosphonates have been first time developed using biocatalyst, CAL-B (lipase).
