  A method for producing trans-2-[(α-methylbenzyl)amino] cyclopentanol being highly pure as a diastereoisomer, which comprises reacting a mixture of two diastereoisomers of trans-2-[(α-methylbenzyl)amino]cyclopentanol represented by the following general formula (1): wherein the absolute configuration of α-position is independently an R-cofiguration or an S-configuration, with succinic acid in a solvent to form succinic acid salts of both diastereoisomers, precipitating a slightly soluble salt in a mixture of succinic acid salts of two diastereoisomers from a solvent, and subjecting a mixture of a slightly soluble succinic acid salt of a diastereoisomer as a solid phase and a liquid phase containing an easily soluble succinic acid salt of a diastereoisomer as a primary component to the solid-liquid separation. The method allows the production of the above diastereoisomer on a commercial scale.
