In(OTf)<sub>3</sub>-Catalyzed Friedel-Crafts Reaction of Aromatic Compounds with Methyl Trifluoropyruvate in Water

In the presence of In(OTf) 3 as a catalyst, aniline derivatives la-c, 1e-h and anisole derivatives 2a-c, 2e reacted with methyl trifluoropyruvate 3 in water at room temperature to give the corresponding Friedel-Crafts reaction products 4a-g and 5a-d in good yields, respectively.
Rapid and convenient synthesis of aryl- and heteroaryl-α-hydroxy-α-trifluoromethyl acetate via Friedel–Crafts alkylation under solvent- and catalyst-free conditions

Solvent- and catalyst-free Friedel–Crafts alkylation reactions of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds with methyl trifluoropyruvate (2) were carried out at room temperature and finished in several minutes with good to excellent yields of the addition products (69→99%), which provided a rapid and convenient method to synthesize aryl- and heteroaryl-α-hydroxy-α-triflouromethyl acetates.

Samariumdiiodide is an efficient precatalyst for the Friedel–Crafts reaction involving various aromatic substrates and chelating electrophiles. Alkyl 3,3,3-trifluoropyruvates are transformed into α-hydroxyesters in good yields with total regioselectivity. In reactions involving an ethyl glyoxylate or a glyoxylic imine, α-hydroxyesters or α-aminoesters are obtained with variable amounts of products
