    1,3-Dicarbonyl compounds are provided having the formula: wherein: R1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR1, ester COOR1, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, and R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR1, ester COOR1, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; R3 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR1, ester COOR1, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; as well as metal and organotin enolate salts thereof. The compounds are effective in enhancing the resistance to deterioration by heat and light of polyvinyl halide resins.

    A stabilizer composition is disclosed for increasing the resistance to yellowing and loss of clarity of a vinyl halidepolymer upon heating, which comprises a thio-1,3-dicarbonyl compound represented by the formula in which M represents hydrogen, an organotin group or a metal, R represents hydrogen, a hydrocarbon group or a group-C-R'", each of R,R", and R'" represents hydrogen x or an organic group, X is oxygen or sulfur, and n representing thevalence of M is an integer from 1 to 4. and at least one heat stabilizer which is an alkyltin compound or a metal salt of a non-nitrogenous monocarboxylic acid or of a hydrocarbon-substituted phenol. Stablized vinyl halide polymer compositions, in which the above stabilizer composition is used to improve the resistance to yellowing and the clarity, are also disclosed.

    Stabilizer compositions for halogen-containing polymers are provided composed of a β-diketone having the formula: wherein: R1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR1, ester COOR,, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl alkyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, and R2 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen; hydroxyl; hydrocarbon having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms and such hydrocarbon groups substituted with one or more groups selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydroxy, alkoxy OR,, ester COOR1, alkyl and alkoxycarbonyl having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; and if Z is R2 or n is 1 to 3, then no more than one R2 is hydrogen; one R1 and one R2 or two R2 may be linked together as an alkylene group to form a cyclic or ring structure; n is a number from 0 to 3; and Z is selected from the group consisting of R2 and a polyvalent linking radical selected from the group consisting of a direct linkage between the polyvalent hydrocarbon R3; wherein: R3 is a polyvalent hydrocarbon group having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; R4 and R5 are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and hydrocarbon groups having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms; and R4 and R5 may be linked together as an alkylene to form a cyclic or ring structure; X is -0- or -S-; m is 0 or 1; and R6 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydrocarbon having from one to about eighteen carbon atoms, and -R3-; as well as metal and organotin enolate salts thereof; and a hydrotalcite having the general formula: wherein x is a number from 0 to 0.5; A is CO3= or S04=, and m is a number representing the number of H20 in the molecule. The stabilizer compositions are effective in enhancing the resistance to deterioration by heat and light of halogen-containing polymers and especially polyvinyl halide resins. The β-diketone and hydrotalcite in these compositions exhibit a synergistic stabilizing effectiveness superior to either alone in like amount.
