The alkylation of the monolithium derivative 5 of 2-(chloromethyl)-3-tosylpropene (1) with bromo- or iodo-methyltrimethylsilane affords the β-silyl sulfone 7, which after nucleophilic substitution of the chlorine atom followed by β-elimination of tosyltrimethylsilane, promoted by tetrabutylammonium fluoride (TBAF), gives 2-substituted conjugated dienes 6 and the outer-ring diene 14. Methods for treating neurodegenerative diseases and disorders are disclosed. The methods utilize compositions containing certain compounds having an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant moiety covalently linked by an amide or ester bond.
Improved stability surgical irrigating solutions and methods of use are disclosed. The compositions comprise bifunctional compounds (i.e., compounds comprising antioxidant and antiinflammatory moieties) and physiological antioxidants to stabilize the bifunctional compounds. The compounds are useful in preventing and treating inflammatory and other disorders incident to surgery.
A process for the preparation of α-methylarene-acetic acids includes treating suitable ketals in an aqueous acidic medium to cause rearrangement of the ketal to an ester of the corresponding α-methylareneacetic acid, and hydrolyzing the thus-formed ester to yield the α-methylareneacetic acid.
Novel platinum (II) complexes represented by general formula (I), wherein AB represents a bidentate diamine ligand, R1 and R2 independently represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, provided that R1 and R2 do not represent hydrogen atoms at the same time, Ar represents an aryl group, and n represents 0 or 1. The platinum (II) complexes have a strong growth inhibiting action on P-388 mouse leukemia cells and are used as novel substances having an oncostatic activity.
