A series of monoprotected glycerol homologues and triols were prepared in high overall yields (>90%) via the hydroboration-oxidation of the corresponding dienols. Hydroboration with disiamylborane and concomitant alkaline oxidation (NaOH, H2O2) was found to be a mild, high-yielding, and highly efficient method for the construction of a variety of glycerol homologues.

Two-directional cross-metathesis of a range of α,ω dienes with a variety of electron deficient alkenes has been accomplished. It was found that the process is quite general and gives complete selectivity for the E,E-dienes, making this a very useful and high yielding protocol for two-directional chain elongation.

Several functionalized diolefins cyclize to hydroazulenes (among others) via olefin metathesis with CH3ReO3. These conversions are regioselective and occur with high diastereoselectivity.
