β-RuCl3, to be detected. A material, hitherto considered2,3 as yet another form of RuCl3, is now shown to be Ru2IVOCl6 (Table 1), a member of a class of oxide chlorides of binuclear ruthenium in which the average oxidation state of ruthenium changes from +4 through +3.5 to +3.

effect in the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene by transitionmetalsulfides is “electronic,” i.e., it is related to the position the metal occupies in the periodic table. This effect, which determines the ability of the transitionmetalsulfides to catalyze the HDS reaction, varies over three orders of magnitude across the periodic table. The first-row transitionmetalsulfides are relatively
action of boiling 8M HNO3 on nitrosylruthenium hydroxide or the nitrocomplex Na2[RuNO(NO2)4OH] (hitherto considered a nitrocomplex of Ru(III)), both of which are conveniently made from ruthenium chloride. Nitro and nitratocomplexes of nitrosylruthenium are also formed from ruthenium tetroxide and ruthenium alloys by the action of oxides of nitrogen or nitric acid.
