    Abstract The thermal decomposition process of (NH4)3ZrF7 at temperature ≥360°C in air was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray powder diffraction. The results show that (NH4)3ZrF7 decomposes sequentially in air at 360°C through a several-step: (NH4)3ZrF7 → (NH4)2ZrF6 → NH4ZrF5 → NH4ZrF9. Then Zr(F, O)2.706 forms due to the hydrolysis

  • Studies of the products from the reactions of co-acids containing concentrated HF and dilute HNO3 with Zircaloy-4

    The pickling of Zircaloy with HF-HNO3 solution as an important surface treatment has been widely used in the nuclear materials industry. However, a thorough knowledge of the products from the reactions of HF-HNO3 system with Zircaloy still needs to be well established. In the present study, the acid solution containing HF (40 wt.%) and HNO3 (65 wt.%) with four volume ratios, 100:0, 94:6, 89:11 and 80:20, was employed and it reacted with Zircaloy-4 violently with gas releasing at an air pressure oil 1 bar, a relative humidity of 30 +/- 5% and a temperature of 25 degrees C. Meanwhile, white products formed within minutes. These products were identified by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The usage of the concentrated HF solution leads to the formation of crystalline ZrF4(H2O), while the usage of co-acids containing concentrated HF and dilute HNO3 results in the formation of crystalline ZrF4(H2O) and NH4ZrF5. In addition, with decreasing the volume fraction of HF and increasing that of HNO3 in the co-acid used, the weight fraction of crystalline ZrF4(H2O) decreases while that of crystalline NH4ZrF5 increases in the products obtained.   • Synthesis of zirconium (hafnium) fluoride compounds and their X-ray luminescence properties

    Twenty-five zirconium (hafnium) fluoride compounds have been synthesized at room temperature in the systems MO2-H2SO4-M'(n)A(HF)-H2O (M = Zr (Hf); M' = Na, K, Rb, Cs, NH4; A = F, SO4) and their X-ray luminescence spectra (luminescence wavelengths and relative intensities) have been measured. The X-ray luminescence of the compounds has been considered as a function of the composition (cations, anions, water content) and different structural factors (CNs, polyhedra, H-bonds). Ammonium compounds do not luminesce, and sodium fluorozirconates and heptafluorozirconates are weakly luminescing. Hexafluorozirconates M2Zr(Hf)F-6 (M= K, Rb, Cs) and M5Zr4F21 center dot 3H(2)O (M = Rb, Cs), as well as oxofluorozirconate Rb2Zr3OF12, are strongly luminescing compounds.
