    A process for preparing a furan compound by the catalytic oxidation of a diolefin such as butadiene or a halo-substituted alkene is provided. ln this process, the starting material is contacted with an aqueous medium having a pH less than about 2 containing (1) iodide ion, (2) a mixture of cuprous and cupric ions, and (3) a solubilizing agent for cuprous ion such as an alkali metal halide. Optionally, an oxygen-containing gas such as air can also be contacted with the aqueous medium. In one embodiment, the starting material is contacted with an aqueous solution of the aforesaid ingredients in one reaction zone to prepare furan and a portion of the solution is passed to a second reaction zone where cuprous ion is oxidized to cupric ion with air and then the air-treated solution returned to the first reaction zone.

    A process is disclosed for the production of polyalkyl tetrahydronaphthalenes wherein a cyclialkylation reaction between an olefinic compound of the general formula where R⁴, R⁵, R⁶ and R⁷ are independently defined and each is a substituent which does not interfere substantially with a Friedel-Crafts reaction, and a substituted benzene compound, is carried out in the presence of an alkyl halide or, in some embodiments, hydrogen halide, a Lewis acid, and, optionally, a phase transfer agent and a hydride abstrating reagent. In some embodiments, the subject process is specifically carried out in the absence of elemental iodine. The subject process, which may be practiced in an unhalogenated hydrocarbon solvent, produces the desired compounds in a surprisingly high yield, with a surprisingly high selectivity to the desired product, and at relatively high rate of reaction, using better, more convenient or less expensive process methodology than many processes known heretofore.

    Polyaminopolymers containing functionality are prepared by (a) contacting a polyfunctional amine with an unsaturated alkylating agent to form an amine/unsaturated alkylating agent adduct; (b) contacting the adduct with a polyfunctional compound to form a polyaminopolymer; (c) contacting the polyaminopolymer with a halogen, hypohalous acid or precursor thereof to form a polyaminopolymer having halohydrin or dihalo functionality; and (d) raising the pH of the polyaminopolymer having halohydrin or vicinal dihalo functionality to cause an increase in molecular weight. Optionally, the polyaminopolymer of step (b) or (c) is contacted with a crosslinking agent therefor having at least two functional groups reactive with amine groups to form a crosslinked polyaminopolymer. When such a crosslinked polyaminopolymer is formed, step (d) can be omitted. The polyaminopolymer of the invention are useful for preparing paper having improved wet strength.

    A triorganomonohalogenosilane is prepared by reacting a triorganomonohydrosilane represented by the following general formula (I ):         R¹₃SiH   (I) with a halogenated allyl compound represented by the following general formula (II): in the presence of metal palladium, or a salt or complex of palladium to replace the hydrogen atom directly bonded to the silicon atom of the triorganomonohydrosilane with a halogen atom. In Formula (I ), the substituents R¹'s directly bonded to the silicon atom may be identical to or different from one another and each represents a monovalent organic group. In Formula (II), the substituents R²'s may likewise be identical to or different from one another and each represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent alkyl group and X represents a chlorine atom, a bromine atom or an iodine atom.
