    Provided is a method for producing a cyclic carbonate obtained by reacting epoxide and carbon dioxide, the method being capable of efficiently producing a cyclic carbonate at a high conversion rate and a high yield, in which degradation of the catalyst over time is suppressed and catalytic activity hardly decreases. A method for producing a cyclic carbonate by reacting epoxide and carbon dioxide in the presence of a quaternary onium salt selected from the group consisting of a quaternary ammonium salt having a halogenated anion as a counter ion and a quaternary phosphonium salt having a halogenated anion as a counter ion, or in the presence of a solid catalyst obtained by immobilizing the quaternary onium salt onto a carrier, wherein an organohalogen compound containing at least one halogen atom in one molecule is added to the reaction system.

    A component of a catalyst (for polymerizing olefins) is prepared by reacting a mixture of (1) a titanium trichloride hydrocarbon aluminum halide dialkyl ether composition, (2) a halogen, interhalogen compound or halgenated hydrocarbon and (3) a dialkyl ether, as in known from U.K. Patent No. 1,559,447; to increase activity of the catalyst and stereoregu- lanty of the polymer, the mixture also includes (4) an electron donor, namely an organic compound containing a N, O, Si, S and /or P atom, e.g. an amine, imine, nitrile, ether, ketone, ester, sulfide, silane, siloxane, phosphine, phosphite or phosphate, in an amount of 10-6 to 0.02 mols per gram of titanium trichloride composition (1). The reaction may be in an inert hydrocarbon solvent at 0° to 150°C for 5 minutes to 6 hours, after which the solid is isolated and washed. The catalyst also includes a known hydrocarbon aluminum halide or hydride as activator and may include a further stereoregularity improving agent. Olefins having 2 to 10 carbon atoms are homo- or copolymerized at0°to 100°C to form stereoregular polyolefin using the catalyst in a small amount, e.g. 50 mg per 1.4 Kg of propylene.

    A titanium trichloride catalyst component containing a minor amount of prepolymerized ethylene and useful in the polymerization of alpha-olefins is produced by reducing titanium tetrachloride with an organoaluminum compound at low temperatures and then treating the resulting reduced solids product with about 1 to 1,000 wt.% ethylene so as to obtain a prepolymerized titanium trichloride reduced solid. The prepolymerized reduced solid can thereafter be activated to a highly active prepolymerized titanium trichloride by treating the prepolymerized reduced solid with a halogenated hydrocarbon and a Lewis base complexing agent or titanium tetrachloride and a Lewis base complexing agent. The prepolymerized reduced solid and the prepolymerized activated titanium trichloride manifests substantially no evidence of friability upon being subjected to mechanical shearing forces. The resulting prepolymerized activated titanium trichloride composition, when employed in combination with an organo-metal compound results in an unexpectedly highly active catalyst obtaining polymers with high heptane insolubles.
