Synthesis of (E) α,2,4-Trinitrostilbenes from (E) 2,4-Dinitrostilbenes

A convenient synthesis of (E) alpha,2,4-trinitrostilbenes 2a-d from (E) 2,4-dinitrostilbenes 1a-e by direct nitration is reported. Isomerization of the trans geometry of the reactant stilbenes to cis in the products was found. The structures of stilbenes 2a, 2c and 2d were confirmed by XRD.

A novel and efficient method for the direct α-nitration of nitrostilbenes was developed in which NO2 was used as the nitro source. This method provided (E)-α-nitrostilbenes derivatives in moderate to good yields. A broad substrate scope, mild and convenient conditions, and high stereoselectivity are important features of this method.
A feasible zeolite-assisted ortho C–H nitration of nitrostilbenes has been developed for the first time.

Nitrostilbenes 3a-e were synthesized in good yield using microwave under neat conditions, whereas heating at 90 degreesC resulted in poorer yields of products.
A novel regioselective method for aminostilbene preparation—the role of sodium azide
The reaction between a derivative of 2,4-dinitrostilbene and sodium azide gave consistently 2-amino-4-nitrostilbenes as the sole products instead of the expected azidonitrostilbene. Based on this finding, we present a one-step preparative method for selective transformation of the ortho-NO2 group in (E)-2,4-dinitrostilbenes into an ortho-NH2 group to give (E)-2-amino-4-nitrostilbenes.
