The paper describes synthesis of tetracyclic linear pyranoxanthones using 3-hydroxyxanthene as a synthon. Its transformation into only linear pyranoxathene followed by oxidation either by CAN or SeO2 provided the desired system, 1, 2, and 3 in fairly good yield.
