  Photoreorganisations of some 3-allyloxy-2-thienylchromones have been described. The photoreactions are initiated through the intramolecular H-abstraction to provide angular tetracyclic compounds. These chromones yield good chemical efficiency due to the involvement of highly stabilized allylic 1,4-biradicals.

  Photo-irradiation of 2-(5-methylthiophen-2-yl)-3-[(naphthalen-2-yl)methoxy]-4H-chromen-4-ones yielded the fascinating angular tetracyclic products via cyclization involving both 2-thienyl ring and naphthylmethoxy group via 1,4-biradical generated in the Norrish type-II process. The stereochemical dispositions of the products were determined by MM2 energy minimized programme and spectroscopic analysis.

  Photoirradiation of a methanolic solution of 3-alkoxy-2-thienyl-4-oxo-4H-1-benzopyrans with Pyrex filtered UV light leads to cyclised and cyclodehydrogenated angular products involving both thiophene and alkoxy groups. The reaction is initiated through H-abstraction. The product distribution depends upon the substituents on the thiophene ring.
