TAUTOMERISM beween methyl-acenes (I, II, III, IV, V) and methylene-dihydroacenes (la, Ila, IIIa, IVa, Va, respectively) has often been postulated to explain side -chain reactivity of aromatic compounds but hitherto no methylene-dihydroacene has beprt isolated.
