An efficientone‐potsynthesis of spiro[indoline‐3,1′‐pyrazolo[1,2‐b]phthalazine] derivatives via three‐componentreaction of phthalhydrazide, isatin, and malononitrile (cyanoacetic ester) is described. This new protocol has the advantages of high efficiency, mild reaction conditions, one‐pot procedure, and convenient operation.

On (cell) suicide watch: The increased permeability of apoptotic cells was used to identify a peptide‐based, covalent inhibitor (NJP2) for glutathioneS‐transferaseomega (GSTO1) that is highly selective for apoptotic cells, with no inhibition of healthy cells (see scheme). This apoptosis‐specific peptide could also be used for imaging programmed cell death.
