  he invention provides novel compounds of formula in which R is isobutyryloxy and salts thereof, processes for making it and a new process forthe preparation oftherapeuti- cally active 3,4-di-isobutyryloxy-N-methyl- phenethylamine (I) and its acid addition salts. According to the process 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine is reacted with benzaldehyde and formaldehyde in the presence of hydrogen and a catalyst to give a compound of formula (II) The compound (II) is demethyiated to give and then reacted with isobutyryl chloride in the presence of a base to give a compound of formula IV from which the benzyl protecting group is removed by catalytical hydrogenation whereby compound (l) is obtained.
