  aminomethylation of the several esters of hypophosphorous acid using chloro-, alkoxy-, and amino-substituted methylamines of various structure is proposed as convenient method for the synthesis of new functionalized aminomethylphosphonites and bis(aminomethyl)phosphinates.   A process for preparing a high-purity quaternary ammonium salt comprising: (1) adding an oxide or hydroxide of a Group 1, 2, 12 or 13 metal to a quaternary ammonium salt containing a protonic acid salt of a tertiary amine as an impurity and thereby neutralizing the tertiary amine protonic acid salt with the metal oxide or hydroxide to convert the acid salt to a tertiary amine and water and to convert the metal oxide or hydroxide to a metal salt at the same time, and (2) removing the tertiary amine, water and metal salt produced from the system.

  The reactions of triphenyl(phenylethynyl)phosphonium bromide with (alpha-aminoethers lead to formation of triphenyl(2-amino-2-phenylvinyl)phosphonium bromides. In the case of acyclic aminoethers, this reaction is accompanied by the formation of the corresponding amine hydrobromide and triphenylphosphine oxide by a scheme analogous to that of alkaline hydrolysis of phosphonium salts and involving attack of the amine on the phosphorus atom. The reaction of the same salt with diethyl- or dipropylamine affords hydrobromides of the latter, while with piperidine, together with salts, its adduct by the triple bond is formed. Piperidinomethane with the same salt forms triphenylphosphonium (2-phenyl-2-piperidinovinyl)phosphonium bromide.
