Lanthanum trifluoromethanesulfonate is an effective single-component catalyst for synthesizing a variety of amides directly from esters and amines under mild conditions. Highly selective amidation of esters and amines, as well as catalyst-controlled amidation of esters, demonstrated the effectiveness of the catalyst system.
The combination of an ammoniumsalt and ethylenediamine promotes deacylation of a variety of unactivatedamides to give the corresponding amines in high yields without the use of strong acids or bases. The reactions proceed without special care regarding air and moisture, and tolerate a wide range of functional groups.

Disclosed is a method for producing a compound having an amino group and/or a hydroxyl group from a substrate compound having an atomic group containing CO or CS by eliminating said atomic group. The substrate compound having an atomic group containing CO or CS (for example, an amide, a carbamate, or the like) is allowed to react with a compound expressed by formula (I) below, at a temperature of 120°C or lower, preferably in the presence of an ammonium salt, to eliminate said atomic group containing CO or CS. In formula (I) A may not be present, and in a case where A is present, A represents an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
