An unexpected cyclization of 1,1,2-tris-(4-methoxyphenyl)-pentan-1,5-diol (7) yielding highly substituted (+/-) 2,2,3-tris-(4-methoxyphenyl) tetrahydropyran (10) under mild reaction conditions is described. A reaction mechanism for the formation of this product is postulated.
