the phenyl ring of which may be further substituted, alkoxyalkyl, or a cycloalkylalkyl, except that R1 and R2 are not simultaneously methyl and R' represents hydrogen, halogen, nitro, cyano, alkyl or alkoxy, which comprises reacting an aminophenol of general formula
wherein R3 represents hydrogen or R1, and R' is as defined above, with an organic halide species of general formula R2X wherein R2 is as defined above and X is halogen under aqueous acidic conditions with the periodic addition of an acid trapping agent in such a way that continuous monitoring of pH is not required.

The present invention relates to a composition for dyeing keratin fibres, comprising one or more fatty substances, one or more surfactants, one or more oxidation bases, one or more particular couplers of particular meta-aminophenol type with a logP of greater than or equal to 0.9, and one or more basifying agents, the fatty substance content in the dye composition representing in total at least 10% by weight relative to the total weight of the said composition. The invention also relates to a dyeing process using such a composition, and also to devices suitable for performing such a process.
