Some clays were tested and Montmorillonite K-10, free of quarz and feldspar, was shown to be an effective catalyst for their easy conversion into the corresponding heterocyclic fused quinone in good yields. A specific effect of microwave irradiation accelerating the reaction with respect to conventional heating in the same conditions is observed.
