    The invention relates to 6-substituted 9-halogenalkyl purine derivatives of the general formula I wherein R6 is selected from the group comprising -NH-furfuryl, -NH-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl), -NH-(3-methylbut-2-en-1-yl), -NH-(4-hydroxy-3-methylbutyl), -NH-(4-hydroxy-1,3-dimethylbut-2-en-1-yl), -NH-(4-hydroxy-1,3-dimethylbutyl), -NH-benzyl, -NH-phenyl, wherein benzyl, furfuryl and phenyl can be unsubstituted or optionally substituted with 1 to 3 substituents selected from the group comprising hydroxy, halogen, methyl and methoxy, and R9 is selected from the group comprising C1-C3 alkyl or C1-C3 alkenyl wherein each of the groups is substituted with one or more halogen atoms, for use in the regulation of growth and development of plant cells, organs and/or whole plants. The invention also relates to preparations containing these derivatives and to novel to 6-substituted 9-halogenalkyl purines.˙

    The present invention relates generally to the field of molecular biology and concerns a method for improving various plant growth characteristics by modulating expression in a plant of a nucleic acid encoding a LDOX (leucoanthocyanidin dioxygenase) polypeptide, a nucleic acid encoding a YRP5, a nucleic acid encoding a CK1 (Casein Kinase type I) polypeptide, a nucleic acid encoding a bHLH12-like (basic Helix Loop Helix group polypeptide, a nucleic acid encoding an ADH2 polypeptide or a nucleic acid encoding a GCN5-like polypeptide. The present invention also concerns plants having modulated expression of a nucleic acid encoding an LDOX polypeptide, or a YRP5 polypeptide, or a CK1 polypeptide, or a bHLH12-like polypeptide, or an ADH2 polypeptide, or a GCN5-like polypeptide, which plants have improved growth characteristics relative to corresponding wild type plants or other control plants. The invention also provides constructs useful in the methods of the invention. The invention also provides hitherto unknown CK1-encoding nucleic acids and hitherto unknown bHLH12-like-encoding nucleic acids useful in per-forming the methods of the invention.

    A method is disclosed to achieve genetic transformation of cotton plants and lines. Immature cotton tissues are genetically transformed in vitro, by Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation. The resultant cotton tissues are subjected to a selection agent or agents to screen for transformants. The transformed cultures are then induced to commence somatic embryogenesis. One possible regime for regenerating such somatic embryos into whole cotton plants is disclosed.
