  The invention relates to the use of thiophenes of the general formula (I) where: R1 and R2 independently of one another stand for hydrogen, substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or R1 and R2 form a ring, n is the number 0 or 1, R3 is a pendant group and R4 to R9 stand for dye chemistry substituents, as pH-indicators.
