Facile preparative redox chemistry of bis(4-dialkylaminophenyl)squaraine dyes
摘要:
Bis(4-dialkylaminophenyl)squaraine dyes are readily reduced in solution by borohydride to give alkali soluble leuco compounds, which exist in the 3-hydroxy-2,4-(4-dialkylaminophenyl)cyclobutenone tautomeric form. The leuco dyes can be oxidised rapidly back to the squaraine dye, thus providing a means of temporarily solubilising the squaraine dye in water. The leuco compounds undergo Substitution reactions typical of vinylogous carboxylic acids. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Nucleophilic addition of phosphorus(III) agents to the electrophilic core of intensely colored squaraine dyes gives a bleached zwitterionic adduct in good to excellent yields (up to 99%) at room temperature. The process can be reversed by adding specific transition metal complexes with high phosphorous(III) affinity.

Squarylium-based colorimetric hydrogen sulfide (H2S) chemosensors (SQ1, SQ2, and SQ3) were developed, and their detection properties were systematically characterized. SQ1 exhibited rapid and high resolution H2S sensing properties through significant color changes detectable by naked-eye with limit of detection as low as 7.2 ppb. SQ1 also showed excellent selectivity for H2S detection over other relevant anions and nucleophiles. Sensing mechanisms of SQ1 were investigated based on spectroscopic and 1H NMR analyses with quantum calculations. Furthermore, SQ1 showed an efficient response to H2S under versatile conditions in the solution, solid, and dyed fabric states, which suggests applicability of SQ1 to simple, low-cost, and practical H2S sensors.
