Carbodiimides, which are well known to form in large amounts during thermal treatment of formamide, might mediate the cyclization of nucleoside 5’-phosphates to 3’,5’-cyclic nucleotides in a formamide medium. The reported reaction route thus suggests that 3’,5’-cyclic nucleotides could have been formed on the early Earth through a formamide-based systems chemistry.
