2-Bromo-1-alkenes are cleanly and conveniently generated in good yields and selectivities via microwave-assisted hydrobromination of 1-alkynes using a combination of lithium bromide (LiBr), chlorotrimethylsilane (TMSCl), and tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB) in acetonitrile (MeCN). A novel zinc-catalyzed intermolecular oxidation of N-sulfonyl ynamides has been developed. A variety of functionalized alpha,beta-unsaturated N-sulfonyl imides are readily accessed by utilizing this approach, thus providing a viable alternative to synthetically useful alpha,beta-unsaturated imides. Importantly, the reaction is proposed to proceed by a vinyligous E2-type elimination pathway, but not metal carbene pathway.
