An effective transformation of alkenes into cyclic carbonates has been achieved using NaHCO3 as the C1 source in acetone–water under microwave heating, with selectivities and yields significantly surpassing those obtained using conventional heating.

Methodology for direct catalytic conversion of olefins into cyclic carbonates using peroxide and carbondioxide under relatively mild conditions is demonstrated. The synthesis and full characterization of manganese and chromium metalloporphyrins and hybrid magnetic nanocomposites prepared thereof is described. Their application in homogeneous and heterogeneous sequential epoxidation/CO2 cycloaddition reactions by using O2 or H2O2 as the oxidant showed high activity and selectivity for the preparation of a variety of cyclic carbonates directly from olefins.

Convenient synthesis of ethylene carbonates from carbon dioxide and 1,2-diols at atmospheric pressure of carbon dioxide
ABSTRACT An efficient and convenientsynthesis of ethylene carbonates was achieved by the reaction of carbon dioxide with 1,2-diols in the presence of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), followed by treatment with 1-bromobutane. This DBU-promoted transformation proceeded at an atmospheric pressure of carbon dioxide at 25 °C and gave ethylene carbonates in good yields. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT
