    Reaction of (4,6,6-trimethyl-3,7-diazanon-3-ene-1,9-diamine)nickel(II) cations with methanal and nitroethane in water or methanol plus base yields the nitro-substituted imine-triamine azamacrocyclic cation (5,7,7,13-tetramethyl-13-nitro-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradec-4-ene)nickel(II). Similar reaction with nitropropane yields the (13-ethyl-5,7,7-trimethyl-13-nitro-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradec-4ene)nickel(II) cation. Singlet ground state salts [Ni(L)]-ClO4)(2) and -ZnCl4 and triplet ground state compounds [Ni(L)(NCS)(2)], Ni(L)(NO2)]ClO4, [Ni(L)(C5H7O2)]ClO4 (pentan-2,4-dionato) and [{Ni(L)}(2)(C2O4)]ClO4)(2) were prepared. (5,7,7,13-Tetramethyl-13-nitro-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradec-4-ene)nickel(II) tetrachlorozincate has the nickel(II) ion in tetrahedrally twisted {+/- 0.045(2)angstrom} square-planar coordination with the Ni displaced by 0.143(1) angstrom from the N-4 mean plane, with distances Ni-N1 = 1.934(3), Ni-N-4 = 1.909(3) Ni-N8 = 1.932(3) and Ni-N11 = 1.927(3) angstrom. The cation shows disorder in the location of the axial component of the gein-diniethyl group that was niodeled with superposition of the 5,7,7,13-tetramethyl-4-ene and 5,5,7,13-tetramethyl-7-ene arrangements, with site occupation factors of 0.80(1) and 0.20(1), respectively. The nitro group is axially oriented, on the saine side of the plane as the axial methyl substituent. The tetrachlorozincate ion is sited on the less crowded side of the cation plane, with one chloride ion axially located with Ni-Cl = 2.921(1) angstrom. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    A series of new heterometallic (CuZnII)-Zn-II and (NiZnII)-Zn-II complexes with N- and N,O open-chain multidentate ligands (L-1 = 4,6,6-trimethyl-1,9-diamino-3,7-diazanon-3-ene; L-2 = 3,7-bis(2-aminoethyl)-1,3,5,7-tetraazabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane; L-3 = 1, 15-dihydroxy-7,9,9-trimethyl-3,6,10,13-tetraazapentadec-6-ene and L-4 = 1-hydroxy-9-oxy-4,6,6-trimethyl-3,7-diazanon-3-ene) have been prepared through the "direct template synthesis" approach, which is a combination of classical template reactions of amines with acetone/formaldehyde and the "direct synthesis" method based on using elemental metals as starting materials. There is a significant decrease in the reaction time when the "direct synthesis" method is used compared to the conventional template condensation methods. X-ray crystallographic analyses of the complexes with the general formula M(L)ZnX4 and [(CuLZnCl3)-Zn-4](2) (M = Cu2+, Ni2+; L = L-1-L-3; X = Cl-, NCS-) reveal the presence of long intermolecular distance interactions, such as semi-coordination, S center dot center dot center dot S and H-bonding, in their crystal organization.     Electrocatalysts for reduction of oxygen were synthesized from AG-3 activated carbon promoted with pyrolized heterobimetallic complexes. [CoLCl2] [ZnDMFACl(3)] and [ML][ZnCl4] (M = CU Ni2+; L = 4,6,6-trimethyl-1,9-dimino-3,7-diaza-nona-3-ene). The optimal conditions of synthesis of the catalysts, which affect the efficiency of oxygen electroreduction, were found and the activity series of the catalyst in relation to the nature of the second metal was determined.

    A new complex [Ni(L)Fe(CN)(5)NO]center dot 2H(2)O (L=4,6,6-trimethyl-1,9-diamino-3,7-di-aza-nona-3-ene) has been obtained and characterized by means of X-ray crystallographic analysis and magnetochemistry. The Fe(CN)(5)NO2- anion links to the Ni(L)(2+) cation through two bridging cyanide groups in a bent fashion. The intrachain Ni center dot center dot center dot Ni and interchain Ni center dot center dot center dot Ni distances are equal to 9.81(8) and 7.75(1) angstrom, respectively. The magnetic behaviour of the complex indicates the zero field splitting parameter D higher than 3 cm(-1) and the average exchange parameter (intra- and interchain) corresponding to direct Ni-Ni magnetic interaction in the crystal lattice equals similar to-0.2 cm(-1).
